Hi Mary - I'd go for the rubber jigsaw mats - that's the plan for in here - or go for some decorator's cover sheets that you can lay over the carpet and lift when you are not painting.

I have similar space and would love to use it similarly, but there is carpeting on the floor. Any thoughts on protecting it?
