The stone lovers
These crustose lichens were covering the rocks on the Cleveland Way path; trying to make sense of them was a complicated but fascinating exercise. The rusty colours come from the iron in the rocks - a nod to the area’s iron mining history. The title is from the Latin name of one species - lithophila, meaning stone-lover. Ink, watercolour, coloured pencil and gouache on rough 16x12 paper. (Not sure what category to put this in, as lichen seem to transcend classification 😆)
